Law Council President Juliana Warner attended the Commonwealth Lawyers’ Association (CLA) Conference in Malta from 6-10 April 2025.

During the CLA Conference, President Warner represented the Law Council at the CLA General Meeting and participated in the Bar Leaders’ Summit with sessions on the protection of bar leaders at risk and the implications of AI on Commonwealth bar associations and law societies. Bar leaders discussed grave examples of lawyers facing harassment, threats, attacks and other interference in the exercise of their professional duties, and the importance of a strong and independent legal profession to safeguard and promote the rule of law.

President Warner also moderated a conference session titled ‘Corporations and Corruption’. During the session, presenters from the UK, Jamaica and Hong Kong discussed the prosecution of corporate corruption and shared perspectives on national and regional responses to corporate corruption. The presentations and extended Q&A provided valuable insight and thoughtful discussion on the challenges of responding to corporate corruption.

At the closing ceremony, the CLA announced that the next Commonwealth Law Conference will be held in Darwin in 2027, with the Chief Justice of the Northern Territory, The Hon. Michael Grant AO delivering remarks. The Law Council is delighted that the Commonwealth Law Conference will again be held in Australia, having previously been held in Melbourne (2017 and 2003) and Sydney (1965).
