Australian Consumer Law
The Australian Consumer Law Committee of the Legal Practice Section of the Law Council of Australia provides a forum for Australian lawyers to discuss emerging consumer law issues and contribute to law reform to improve the lives of consumers.
Members of the committee are lawyers from across the country with extensive professional experience and expertise in consumer protection law from a broad range of different practice types, including private legal practice, the independent bar, legal aid, community legal services, legal services in remote and regional communities, and academia. Members of the committee provide legal advice and representation to consumers from socially and economically disadvantaged backgrounds, including in remote communities.
The committee draws on this experience in setting priorities, with a focus on law reform which will improve outcomes for consumers experiencing vulnerability. Current priorities include faulty second-hand cars and car loans, consumer guarantee remedies under the Australian Consumer Law, NDIS consumer disputes, Centrepay, insurance and superannuation claims handling and scams.
