National Golden Gavel and Australian Young Lawyer Awards 2023

Speech delivered by Ms Elizabeth Carroll, Executive Member of the Law Council of Australia, at the National Golden Gavel, Sydney, 24 November 2023.

"Thank you. I wish to begin by acknowledging the Traditional Custodians of the land on which we gather tonight, the Gadigal people of the Eora Nation, and pay my respects to their Elders past, present and emerging. I also wish to extend that respect to all Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples in attendance.

The Law Council President, Mr Luke Murphy, sends his apologies for not being able to attend, as he is currently at the LAWASIA Conference in Bangaluru, India. However, I am very fortunate to have the opportunity to attend in his place tonight, and bear witness to the talent of the eight incredible finalists from across Australia.

On behalf of the Law Council of Australia, I want to commend all the finalists for your very entertaining presentations tonight. Your confidence and wit certainly made our jobs as judges very difficult, so congratulations to you all.

Before tonight’s winners are announced, it is my pleasure to present the Law Council’s Australian Young Lawyer Awards for 2023. These Awards seek to recognise the extraordinary contributions made by early career practitioners to our profession and the wider community. As always, the Law Council received many outstanding nominations."
