LAWASIA - Constitutional Law and Rule of Law Conference
LAWASIA held its inaugural Constitutional Law and Rule of Law Conference in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, on 4-5 October.
President of the Law Council, Arthur Moses SC, appeared as a panelist for the session “Why a Separation of Powers in Government? Its importance to Constitutionalism” and delivered a speech on the importance of judicial independence and maintaining public confidence in the separation of powers.
Mr Moses served as a panelist alongside Professor Kevin Tan (Adjunct Professor, National University of Singapore), Mr Shyam Diva (Vice President, LAWASIA), Mr Philip Dykes SC (Chairman, Hong Kong Bar Association), and Justice Paul Howard (Judge of the Federal Circuit Court).
The conference attracted participants across LAWASIA jurisdictions and regions, and fostered dialogue on the importance of constitutionalism to, and accountability of, public institutions.
The Honourable Prime Minister of Malaysia, Tun Dr Mahathir bin Mohamed, delivered the keynote address, and Malaysia’s Chief Justice, the Rights Honourable Dato’ Seri Utama Tengku Maimun binti Tuan Mat, also delivered a special address.
The President also had the opportunity to meet with Dato’ Seri Dr Anwar bin Ibrahim at a private meeting held prior to his address at the conference.
