The Justice Project
The Law Council has undertaken one of the most comprehensive, national reviews into the state of access to justice in Australia in the past 40 years.
The Justice Project, which began in early 2017, was overseen by an expert Steering Committee of eminent lawyers, jurists and academics, and chaired by former High Court Chief Justice, the Hon. Robert French AC.
Looking at the justice system from the people’s point of view, the Justice Project has focused on justice barriers facing those with significant social and economic disadvantage, as well as identifying what is working to reduce those barriers.
The Final Report details constructive and informed recommendations which provide a roadmap for future action, building the case for new, whole-of-government justice strategies secured by appropriate funding.
The Final Report includes 59 recommendations and consists of 22 chapters totaling over 1400 pages.
It also includes dedicated chapters for each of the 13 groups identified in the terms of reference as facing significant economic and social disadvantage.
The release of the Final Report has followed an extensive literature review and wide-ranging consultation process. This included more than 150 consultations from numerous rural, regional and metro visits and telecommunications across Australia – gathering the real life examples and building the evidence base.
In total 129 submissions were received and a Progress Report was released in March 2018.
We want to take the reporting of this crisis out of realm of numbers and into the realm of lived experience. The Justice Project would like to thank all of those who have been involved in the project and is pleased to be able to share the findings of the Final Report with you.
